Almost done with this beautiful bag. Oz is at Home Depot now finding Masonite board which will be cut to 24x7 inches for an insert in the bottom of the bag. Then I'll sew in the lining! :)

Saturday morning
I got a phone call from Grant today. It turns out that walking 40 km a day can be dangerous to a body, even a great young body. He was found limping along the road by some kind Spanish people who carried him to the next hostel.
He has tendinitis in the tendon which is just at the hip at the front of the leg...he is recovering and taking the bus part of the way so that he/ his leg can heal and rest up.
He says that learned a good lesson...to listen to himself and follow his own pace and not a pace that someone else has set up. (He was trying to keep up with a 65 year old marine type Spaniard). Oy.

A postcard from Spain
Our handsome son, Grant, is on a month long pilgrimage called El Camino do Santiago de Compostela. He left on June 11 for France and is walking the road which is about 500 miles long. These photos are were taken just before he left for his flight to France at Kansas City International.
Grant called yesterday from Carrion do Los Condes and reports that he has a blister. Not a big one. But still. When you are walking 10 hours, 41 km a day, a blister can be a problem.
I got a postcard today and Grant writes:
Miss you all tons. Mom, you would love the wildflowers here. Dad, you would love the incredible vistas. Logan, you would love las chiquitas. Muy bellas. As you can see, I'm booking it across Spain. See you soon. And pray for my ass. I need it.
Love,
Grant

In The Works
I'm taking breaks from the handwork on the Weekend Getaway Satchel by doing some small purses and a small knit animal in an Italian merino wool yarn that I found in my stash. Shown here are the pieces of another zipper mouth purse ready to be sewn up with my best friend, Bernina.

Marianne and Grant
I've posted more photos from California to flickr (for all your family members who couldn't make the trip). We had a lovely BBQ at the Kenwood depot on June 6. The weather was cool and perfect in my opinion and it was so fun to meet Doug's family and see my Katy, John and Ken (Uncle Kinley) again.

Beach Boys
It's been a super fun and busy week. My high school girlfriend, Liz, and her daughter, Grace, are in Lawrence for a visit this week. I turned 49 on Thursday and I was treated to thunderstorms and the threat of more tornadoes. On Friday, we made a road trip through the Flint Hills to Manhattan, Kansas. Grace loves to knit so we've had fun knitting together and perusing the yarn stores. Today we went to Maggie's farm to see Barbara's flock of sheep (they looked hot in the humid weather) and Grace got a lesson in spinning on a Louet spinning wheel. Tomorrow we go into Kansas City to see The Nelson Atchins Museum and do some more sight seeing.

California
Logan and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco.
The weekend trip to California was so wonderful. Everything was perfect and I'm so glad that we went to Katy and Doug's wedding. I didn't take photos at the wedding because I was too busy crying and wiping the snot from my nose. But, Oz took a million photos and I will post those to my flickr account soon.

Katy and Doug

My sweet cousin Katy Perrings is getting married this weekend to Doug Hawkins. I am packing lots of Kleenex because I always sob at weddings...and I look forward to doing something foolish like drinking too much wine and forgetting my name. The wedding is in northern California, a place I have never been and I'm am just as excited as seeing these two people in love as I am jumping into the ocean.
Grant and Logan are going with us too. Of course, Logan won't pack until the last hour because he knows how to push my buttons. But I am smart, this time. I have packed his suit, dress shirt, tie, dark socks and dress shoes already. I don't care if he forgets clean underwear or his toothbrush this time, just as long as he is not wearing white socks with his dress shoes.

Orange Man
I spent a couple hours this morning sewing this little guy. It was storming so hard that I decided to hide in my sewing room. As you can see, the sun is out now. :)
